Today, let’s talk about the arcuate eminence, a structure in the temporal bone that you’ve likely encountered during anatomical dissections or in your surgical training. Now, while the arcuate eminence is traditionally considered a landmark for the superior semicircular canal, its relationship with the canal isn’t as reliable as you might think. A cadaveric study of 26 temporal bones revealed that 92% had arc-like eminences. However, these didn’t always correspond to the superior semicircular canal. Interestingly, some of these eminences were actually linked to sulci of the temporal lobe, with the majority being traces of the occipitotemporal sulcus rather than the canal itself. So, why does this matter? Well, if you’re using the arcuate eminence as a surgical landmark, relying on it alone could lead you off track. To improve accuracy, it’s advisable to use additional anatomical landmarks. One reliable reference point is the porus acusticus, which offers a more consistent guide to the superior semicircular canal. Combining the arcuate eminence with the porus acusticus and other key landmarks during surgery enhances precision and reduces the risk of complications.
