Manic Miner for the BBC Micro by Software Projects is a conversion of the legendary ZX Spectrum game from Matthew Smith. Released in 1984, the BBC Micro version was written by D.J. Coathupe about whom I have found almost nothing online. You have to guide Miner Willy through a series of caverns (I think there are twenty in this version), collecting all the flashing objects and avoiding the various denizens and long falls. This is the classic platformer that started a whole genre, and the BBC version appears to be a pretty decent copy of the original. I'm not sure if all the levels are the same as the original, or have exactly the same layout, but the ones I did see seemed a match. The graphics are pretty much identical to the original. I found some of the jumps harder to place, but I got into it after several goes - I think this is an effect that occurs on most of the versions as you jump between them as a player. Overall, this is a good conversion of the original game. This run was made on the 30th March 2025 using the BeebEm emulator on PC. The final score reached was 8,940 points.
