In this new Unprofesor video, we'll explain "Who was Suleiman the Magnificent?" Who was Suleiman the Magnificent? Suleiman the Magnificent (I) was born in 1494 (November 6) and died in 1566 (September 7). He was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire. In fact, under his rule, the Ottoman Empire dominated much of the western Mediterranean and almost the entire Red Sea. He is also remembered for his strong protection and promotion of the arts and the development of sciences within the empire. On a political level, it's also worth noting that he was one of the great reformers of the empire's legislation. In other words, he implemented reforms that benefited his empire. A brief summary of his life: at age 7, he was sent to study in Istanbul; at 17, he was already governor of Istanbul, and at 26, he was declared caliph because his father, Selim I, had died. Thus, he took the reins of the Ottoman Empire from 1520 until his death, as we mentioned before, in 1566. Let's now take a look at the achievements Suleiman I achieved during his reign. First, we'll look at his military achievements. If we focus on Europe, we'll see that he conquered Belgrade, Rhodes (an island, but part of Europe), and Hungary. He even besieged Vienna twice, although he was defeated. Likewise, the entire Balkans and part of the north, including Hungary, ended up as Ottoman territories. This is why the Ottoman Empire eventually gained so much importance within the European political framework.
