To fight as one, sodiers must rely on each other. The iron Oath is the essence of the Host of Færder, where no one stands alone. The Skald’s Foreword: Hear now these songs of Færder. I am but a skald who keeps the memory of deeds, for it is the duty of a skald to remember what warriors have done when the storm has passed and the shields lie silent. In the northern lands, where the sea strikes the rock and the wind is seldom still, there stood a company of warriors known as Færder. They were not kings nor jarls, but men and women who took up shield and steel when the call was given. Among them were Sigurd, the red-bearded veteran who had seen many storms, and Saga, the shieldmaiden whose courage was spoken of in every campfire tale. They stood not alone, for many warriors gathered beneath the carved shields of Færder. Some songs tell of the training fields, where young warriors learned from older hands. Some speak of the oath that binds shield to shield. Others remember the fallen, whose names are carried in the wind and in the halls of memory. But there are also songs of battle. Songs of the moment when the forest grows silent, when the enemy stands across the field like a shadow, and when the cry rises that sends warriors running toward thunder and steel. These are such songs. I sing them so the deeds of Færder are not forgotten, and so that those who listen may know what it means when warriors stand together against the storm. For when the shields are lifted and the war-cry echoes across the field, the warriors of Færder say: We are the storm.
