Today's road tour takes us along the A985, an important route in Fife connecting Rosyth and the Dunfermline area, to the Kincardine Bridge and then on to Stirling or the M80 motorway to Glasgow. Whilst the A985 is a primary route carrying around 11,000 vehicles per day, it is entirely single carriageway, including over the Kincardine Bridge, although traffic on the bridge was relieved by the nearby Clackmannanshire Bridge in 2008. The A985 is a key route during poor weather when the Forth Road Bridge is affected, particularly for high sided vehicles. The A985 was designated around 1931 as an upgrade to the B911 and B912, and ended on the eastern end near Limekilns at the now defunct A906, which followed the rest of the route to Inverkeithing, and north to Dunfermline (now B9156). At the Kincardine end, the old route originally passed through town and northwards to Clackmannan (now A977). When the Kincardine Bridge was completed in 1936, the present A977 route became a reality, but also included the bridge and terminated at the A905. In the mid-1950s, the bridge and western section became the A876, only becoming the final part of the A985 in 2008 when the Clackmannanshire Bridge was opened nearby and then carried the A876.
