Presenter: Paul Frizelle, PT, DPT, MS, OCS, MTC, CSCS, CES, PES Title: Epidemiology and Prevention of Injury in the Young Athlete Presented: January 25, 2018 Abstract: The number of young people who participate in sports is estimated to be close to 30 million. In the past several decades, there has been a shift in how this population of young athletes participate in their sports activities. This shift has been towards a young athlete that stays focused on participating in a single sport from a much earlier age, and in much higher volume of time than ever previously known. There are several stakeholders in the development of these athletes and these competing interests may result in unintended outcomes. Injury rates related to overuse have increased and the rates of surgery secondary to sports-related trauma has continued to skyrocket. This presentation will examine the new young athlete, and provide an overview of the most commonly encountered sports related injuries. Then, I will discuss the strategies available to health care professionals, coaches, and parents that can guide these young athletes to enjoy sport, while developing a lifelong relationship with health and wellness.
