DETAILED TUTORIAL - How I perform Pterygium Excision with Conjunctival Autograft

A pterygium (plural: pterygia) is a noncancerous, wing-shaped growth of the conjunctiva (the clear membrane covering the white of your eye) that extends onto the cornea (the clear, outer layer of the front of the eye). It typically starts at the inner corner of the eye, near the nose, but can also occur on the outer side. What causes a pterygium? It is strongly associated with exposure to certain environmental factors. The condition is often referred to as "surfer's eye" because it is common in people who spend a lot of time outdoors in sunny, windy, or dusty conditions. Key risk factors include: UV light exposure: This is considered the primary cause. Prolonged and unprotected exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is a significant risk factor. Irritants: Chronic exposure to wind, dust, sand, and other airborne irritants can contribute to the development of a pterygium. Treatment for a pterygium depends on the severity of the symptoms. Non-Surgical Treatment: For most cases, especially when the pterygium is small and not causing major problems, treatment is conservative. Lubricating eye drops: Over-the-counter or prescription artificial tears can help alleviate dryness and irritation. Steroid eye drops: For inflammation and redness, a doctor may prescribe mild steroid eye drops. Protective eyewear: Wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays, especially those with a wraparound design, can protect the eyes from sun, wind, and dust, which can prevent the pterygium from growing and becoming inflamed. Surgical Treatment: Surgery is typically recommended when the pterygium is causing significant vision problems. The pterygium is causing severe and persistent discomfort that doesn't respond to other treatments. The patient wants it removed for cosmetic reasons. Pterygium surgery is a common outpatient procedure, usually performed under local anesthesia. A key concern with surgical removal is the risk of recurrence. To reduce this risk, surgeons often use a technique called a conjunctival autograft, where a small piece of healthy tissue is taken from another part of the patient's eye and used to cover the area where the pterygium was removed. Other techniques, such as using amniotic membrane grafts or medications like mitomycin C, may also be used to prevent regrowth. 💡 If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comment section below! ⚡ Dr. Krad is a Cataract and Refractive Surgery specialist in Orange County, California. #pterygium #carnosidad #pterigión #eye ✅ Recommended playlists: ❤️ My Favorite Videos!
