Dell PowerEdge R530 - This popular 2U server is part of Dell's 13th generation. In our video, we will provide a general over of the R530, and specifically highlight the memory. We will discuss the differenty types of RAM and CPUs which are compatible with the R530 as well as physically install the DIMMs. Sit back and enjoy. The R530 is a dual CPU socket server supporting Intel Xeon E5-2600 V3 and V4 series CPUs, which is an LGA2011-3 socket. That is one of the enhanced features from the 12th gen (R520) to the 13th gen (R530). Regarding the memory, the PowerEdge R530 has 12 DIMM slots operating on DDR4 memory. There are several options for speed, including 2133 MT/s, 2400 MT/s or 2666 MT/s. Please note - the 2666 will clock down to the 2400. However, they will work. You have several options on DIMM sizes including 4GB 8GB 16GB and 32GB. No. Unfortunately 64GBs will not work. There are two types of RAM compatible with the Dell R530 server: ECC Registered (RDIMM) and Load Reduced (LRDIMM). The max configuration is the same for both LRDIMM and RDIMM. The Dell PowerEdge R530 maxes out at 384GB via (12 x 32GB) 2400 MT/s ECC Registered or Load Reduced Server Memory. Load Reduced tends to be a bit less expensive so we recommend LRDIMMs more often than not. As mentioned above, there are 12 DIMM slots. CPU1 controls 8 DIMMs and CPU2 controls 4 DIMMs. CPU1 has 4 memory channels with 2 DIMMs per channel. CPU2 also has 4 memory channels with each DIMM slot acting as it's own channel. Dell has conveniently labeled and color coded each DIMM slot to make it easy to identify the start of each channel. The beginning of each change is white. Black tabs represent the second DIMM in the channel. If you are not maxing out, then we recommend inserting your memory at the start of each channel skipping the second DIMM slot. However, we recommend maxing out with 12 x 32GBs to get the most out of your Dell R530. We also understand not every application out there requires the most robust memory configuration.
