Feral goats live on the sheer cliffs of The Oa, the exposed 200m high headland that protrudes into the North Atlantic from the Scottish island of Islay. Few people live on the Oa peninsular now, but before the Highland Clearances it had a population of over 800. The American Memorial commemorates the hundreds of lives lost when two American troopships, HMS Otranto and SS Tuscania, floundered beneath it’s sheer cliffs. The Oa is at the northern entrance of the Irish Sea, less than 40km from the Irish Coast. The Oa is now a farmed Nature Reserve. The feral goats, which are not indigenous, can be problematic. There was a furore in 2018 when a professional American hunter came to the Isle of Islay and very publicly glorified the hunting of the feral goats. The First Minister of Scotland promised to review legislation.
