The book of Hebrews was written between the ascension of Christ and the destruction of the temple in 70 AD, primarily addressing three groups of Jewish people: those who were unsaved and unreceptive to the gospel, those who understood its arguments intellectually but had not received Christ, and Jewish Christians who were saved but at risk of being pulled back into a works-based system by those around them. Christ is the fulfillment of the Sabbath rest foreshadowed throughout the Old Testament, and salvation comes through repentance and faith alone — not through works, religious ritual, or penance. At the moment of salvation, Christ's righteousness fully covers the believer, God's love is complete and unchanging, and the believer is adopted into God's family as a co-heir in the eternal kingdom with nothing left to earn. When believers sin, the response is repentance and a return to rest rather than penance, as dwelling on sin and striving to earn forgiveness pulls people away from active faith. Human works are insufficient to please God in any way, and according to Hebrews 9:27, every person dies once and then faces judgment. True and lasting rest is found solely by trusting in Christ's death, burial, and resurrection.
