STERNENKIND – The Story Behind The Story The story tells of the faery child Malyenkaya, whose journey to unknown lands in the north leads her to meet and fall in love with a stranger. Seemingly abandoned, she returns home with child and is shunned by her own kind. The death of her baby makes her question her reason for being, and she eventually travels north once more in search of answers. What she learns there brings her peace and redemption. ‘Sternenkind’ (lit. ‘child from the stars’ or ‘starchild’) began life as a song written in 2006 by The Dreamside, and appeared on their fifth studio album, 2009’s ‘Lunar Nature’. The title itself, in Roman Schoensee’s words, “is a German expression for a child born dead – a miscarriage, or a baby who died immediately after birth – and comes from a book entitled ‘A Star That Was Not Meant To Shine’. As with all of The Dreamside’s songs, the lyrics to Sternenkind are very personal and are based around experiences that deal with loss, hope and love – feelings and emotions that everyone can relate to.” It didn’t take the band long to realise that ‘Sternenkind’ had the potential to explore other avenues to bring its story to life, and it would go on to become the focus of a unique creative partnership. The band approached Dutch animation artist Eva de Winkel to work on some stills for the video to the song, an idea which grew from a short, stop-motion animated film that Eva had devised. Eva’s interpretation took the story into a strange and mystical land, and, once the storyboard had been created, everyone felt that the narrative was so strong that it needed to be written and illustrated. Enter British music author and photographer John Tucker. John had first interviewed The Dreamside when the band released ‘Spin Moon Magic’ in 2005 and had stayed in touch with the band. In 2008 the band asked John to participate in ‘Sternenkind’ by working out and writing the story for the book, based loosely on the artist’s storyboards. Given a free rein, John developed a story, working in occasional references to other material from the band’s back catalogue to create points of reference to The Dreamside’s history. Eva then took this tale and brought it to life through her vivid illustrations. As such, the song, the video and the book, while all sharing the same source and inspiration, and all working together in complete harmony, present the story in different ways.
