No Knowledge of Tools While this is my fourth battle against Fionn mac Cumhaill between the original SMT V and Vengeance, the specific limitations of this challenge manage to provide a different experience for this battle than the others, and it’s also pretty insightful into what difficulties will be most prominent without the benefit of more versatile party members like Tao and Yoko from this point through the end of the game. Fionn can be battled after completing two earlier quests, the Mandrake quest and the Girimekhala quest. The Mandrake quest also happens to provide the powerful Fairy Banquet Magatsuhi skill, which was an incredibly important tool in my original SMT V playthrough but has been completely absent from my Vengeance one, so this may be the only time I get to use it. Fionn’s behavior isn’t all too different from his initial appearance, only now he has stronger attacks and will almost always use a second skill for his second action rather than a basic attack. At the start of the battle, most of his actions will be randomly chosen among Pierce Armor, Mist Rush, and Bufudyne, but he’ll use Tarukaja as his first action every four turns and Mac an Luin followed by a basic attack on the turn after that. He gathers Magatsuhi for Maragidyne at around 80% HP and adds Fatal Sword to his random skill pool after that, then gathers Magatsuhi for Maragidyne again at around 40% HP and begins using Deathbound after that, although I’m not sure if he uses that entirely randomly like his other skills. The Magatsuhi gather and Maragidyne interrupt his Mac an Luin cycle, although I’m not quite sure about the specifics there. This battle is challenging for most of the same reasons as other post-Qadištu battles, but arguably to a greater extent here than before; boss defensive profiles have ballooned such that attackers other than the Nahobino are heavily lacking, the availability of party members with decent healing skills is quite low, and the Nahobino doesn’t have enough opportunities to use buffs or debuffs himself. Resistances also aren’t quite as effective against Fionn since most of his attacks are Physical, which heightens the need for both buffs and debuffs for party members to survive more consistently. Since Fionn distributes a high amount of damage among the entire party with Mist Rush and other powerful attacks, the only real healing option here is Mediarahan, which the Nahobino can finally use thanks to the Taito Aogami essences. However, 112 MP is quite steep, and it’s very undesirable for the Nahobino to be forced to use Chakra Pots. Luckily, he can spare the skill slots to use both Restore and High Restore, which provides solid MP regeneration with every Ruinous Thunder or Elec Gem, and Omnipotent Succession also provides further MP regeneration for each strike at no extra cost. That allows him to use Mediarahan a number of times throughout the battle without having rely on items for MP restoration. He has very few actions to spare for buffing, but he can use Boon Boost to extend Fairy Banquet to four turns with Oberon or Setanta present, and single-target debuffs every few turns from demons are good enough here. Oberon can actually help the team tread water defensively surprisingly well with only Diamrita so the Nahobino doesn’t have to use Mediarahan early on, then once his MP is exhausted Setanta can fill in for the rest of the battle. The expiration of Fairy Banquet happened to coincide well with Fionn’s Maragidynes, so those were good opportunities to swap to Fire immunities before resetting Fairy Banquet with the regular demons. Overall, while the Nahobino still had to do most of the work himself here, proper use of the other demons as resources and prudent demon swapping as necessary were still vital to achieving victory.
