NJ CTA Webinar 5: Environmental Impacts of Cannabis: Cultivation & Manufacturing

In partnership with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, this webinar explores the environmental dimensions of cannabis cultivation and manufacturing in New Jersey, with an emphasis on regulatory compliance and sustainable practices. This webinar will cover the operational impacts on land, water, and air, the necessity of obtaining regulatory authorizations, and how businesses can proactively address challenges such as odor control, energy use, and community engagement. Drawing on research, state agency interviews, and industry insights, we’ll provide actionable recommendations to minimize negative environmental and community effects while aligning with regulatory standards. Key topics include early engagement with regulatory bodies such as the Cannabis Regulatory Commission, Department of Health, and Department of Agriculture to understand constraints before purchasing land; developing compliance plans for odor control and energy reduction; and conducting economic growth analyses to assess community impact. Attendees will also learn how to foster collaborative relationships with stakeholders, educate communities, and implement strategies to align environmental sustainability with business goals in the cannabis industry. Meet Your Panelists: David Pepe, PG, NJDEP Dir. of the Office of Permitting & Project Navigation Elizabeth Dragon, NJDEP Assistant Commissioner, Community Investment & Economic Revitalization About the New Jersey Department of State's Cannabis Training Academy: The NJ CTA was created after The New Jersey Business Action Center (NJBAC) was designated by the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJ-CRC) to build and launch a no-cost technical assistance program that provides education about the cannabis industry in New Jersey, highlights opportunities within the industry—whether they involve directly handling the plant or not—and guide participants on how to apply for a state license, empowering them to take meaningful steps toward success in this evolving market. You can learn more and register here at CTA.NJ.GOV Our program catalog offers 10 levels with over 60 courses to ensure New Jersey residents, cannabis entrepreneurs, workers, prospective license holders and ancillary services providers are equipped with application preparedness, business plan development knowledge and a deeper knowledge of the cannabis industry inside the Garden State. By learning from leading experts, including experienced cannabis operators, advocates and experienced professional service providers, students gain the knowledge and tools needed to make informed decisions that benefit themselves, their families, and their communities.
