For thousands of years, the striped hyena roamed across Europe, cleaning the land as one of nature’s most important scavengers. Twice they disappeared—first at the end of the Ice Age, and again in historical times—leaving a gap in Europe’s ecosystems that no other species has filled. This film explores why Europe needs the striped hyena back, what role they play in keeping ecosystems healthy, and where they could be reintroduced today. From the Balkans and Southern Spain to Sicily and the Caucasus, we’ll look at the landscapes where hyenas could thrive again. We dive into their interactions with deer, bison, wild horses, boar, water buffalo, and even future rewilding species like elephants, rhinos, saiga, and gazelles. We also examine their relationships with wolves, bears, lynx, leopards, lions, and other predators—showing how hyenas fit into the predator–scavenger guild. Most importantly, we challenge the myths: striped hyenas are shy, nocturnal, and primarily scavengers. They are not a danger to people, but instead a missing piece of Europe’s ecological puzzle. By recycling carcasses, crushing bones, and preventing disease spread, they make ecosystems stronger and more resilient to climate change. Rewilding the striped hyena is not just about restoring a species—it’s about restoring balance, biodiversity, and a living connection to Europe’s wild past.
