Laser Precision WITHOUT the Laser? ArcDUO First Impressions!

Reducing astigmatism helps improve a patient's quality of vision without glasses. There are a few ways to reduce astigmatism during cataract surgery. Correcting astigmatism with lens implants, such as Torics or Light Adjustable Lenses, have been a reliable way to reduce astigmatism. Reducing astigmatism with relaxing incisions in the cornea are another way to treat a patients astigmatism. The most common relaxing incision performed is called an LRI, or Limbal Relaxing Incision. These are partial thickness cuts in the peripheral cornea to reduce the relatively steep curvature in that meridian. Ideally they would be slightly curved, or arcuate. LRI's can be performed manually or with femtosecond laser. Femtosecond laser is more precise, pretty, but more expensive. Manual LRI's work and are much cheaper, but they are significantly less precise. MST recently released a new device, called the ArcDUO, which attempts to bridge the gap between manual and Laser LRI's. A suction ring and guided template helps the surgeon create beautiful manual arcuate relaxing incisions with similar precision to Laser Arcuate Incisions.
