Thousands of supporters packed into a stadium in Bangui on Saturday as Touadera danced and addressed the crowds, calling on their support for the December 28 vote. Voters will head to the polls in presidential and legislative elections, a contest that will unfold amid a deepening security crisis and the leader’s growing reliance on Russia for protection. Touadera has led the country since 2016 and is seen as likely to win a third term after a constitutional referendum in 2023 removed term limits. His decision to run again sparked a street protest by thousands of people earlier this year. Touadera is one of Russia’s closest allies in Africa, but tensions have grown this year over Moscow’s demand to replace the private Wagner mercenary group with the Russian military unit Africa Corps. Meanwhile, rights groups have raised concerns about repression ahead of the vote, while a major opposition group vows to boycott the polls. Touadéra, whose candidacy is supported by his political party, the United Hearts Movement, faces seven other candidates. =========================================================== Clients are reminded to adhere to all listed restrictions and to check the terms of their licence agreements.
