This is the first use of our hand built cider press I built last fall. I added the Weston fruit crusher a couple of weeks ago along with a fresh coat of food grade mineral oil. Today's the day. We have about two bushels of ripe pears ready for pressing. Our goal was three gallons. I was shocked to get just over four! A five gallon batch of must is in the fermenter as I type. By the time two bushels were done I had learned a much easier way to take the cake out of the bucket and the grinder works much better by simply turning the handle back and forth a quarter turn. It works much better that way. I still call it a success! Wine to follow.
