SPEAKERS: ▶Matt Angle (CEO, Paradromics) ▶Nanthia Suthana (Professor of Neurosurgery & Biomedical Engineering, Duke) ▶Gyorgy Buzsaki (Biggs Professor of Neuroscience, NYU) ▶Dan Rizzuto (CEO of Nia Therapeutics) ▶Nick Halper (Co-Founder of Braingrade) The speakers discuss the emerging field of using neural implants for memory enhancement, emphasizing that the goal is not to control the brain like a computer, but rather to use "nudges" to bring the brain into mental states where memories are more likely to be formed. This approach relies heavily on data science, large data sets, and machine learning/deep learning methods to mine data and identify neural signatures or biomarkers that predict brain states associated with memory performance. As part of training patients recall lists while brain data is gathered from distributed areas, including the hippocampus and neocortex. This allows researchers to identify endogenous rhythms that predict with high accuracy whether a patient is currently in a good or poor memory state (e.g., whether they will recall information presented to them). Using these insights, responsive neurostimulation can be employed to deliver a targeted nudge to make a poor memory state look more like a good memory state, thereby improving verbal recall without effort on the part of the patient. This focus on improving verbal memory is crucial, as this specific type of memory loss is often the issue with the biggest social impairment for patients with conditions like Alzheimer's or traumatic brain injury (TBI).
