25 years ago, in the summer of 1993, over 12,000 people took part in the largest act of civil disobedience in Canadian history by blockading the logging of old-growth forests in Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island in Nuu-chah-nulth territory. Almost 900 people were arrested near Tofino that summer. The Clayoquot movement significantly strengthened the environmental movement, First Nations rights, and forestry and land use policies in BC. But the job is still not done. The large scale logging of endangered old-growth forests is still rampant in major parts of BC and Clayoquot Sound is still not saved. The BC government must do the right thing by enacting science-based old-growth protection policies, ensuring a sustainable, value-added second-growth forest industry, and supporting First Nations Tribal Parks, land use plans and sustainable economic diversification.
