Determining the location of foreign objects in real-time is a challenge for many types of vehicles. The instrumentation utilized to complete this task ranges from long-wavelength light sensors like RADAR and LiDAR to visible light sensors like cameras, and the price for these sensors can be prohibitive. The technology to give machines a sense of spatial awareness has not been fully developed, and as a consequence, the list of approaches is quite extensive. This project will attempt to create a high-performance sensor while minimizing its price, physical size, and mechanical components. The approach is to compare various commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) LiDAR sensors purchased from websites that everyday hobbyists use like Amazon, DigiKey, and Mouser. After a comparison has been completed, a sensor will be chosen to generate an array of points by using a beam steering scheme using mirrors from a DLP projector. By using COTS components, the price of a fully functional distance sensor may be reduced while accessibility increases.
