Highlights - Finals of the Men's Individual Sabre Fencing Event at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games. On the Left - Luigi SAMELE of Italy (FIE Rank 4). Samele's career is full of ups and downs. When the infamous coach, Christian Bauer had been head coach for Italy, Bauer had selected Samele to groom for the national team. This culminated in Samele qualifying for the Men's Sabre Team Event at the 2012 London Olympic Games, where he showed a good performance against Russia in the Bronze medal match, leading to an Italian victory. Going into the Rio Olympic Cycle, Samele would win his first individual world cup at New York 2014, but then fell out of the FIE Top 16 Ranking, and was passed off for selection on the Italian Team which won the World Championships in 2015, and also as one of the two Italian Men's Sabre Fencers who qualified for the Rio Olympic Games - Aldo MONTANO, and Diego OCCHIUZZI. The real kicker is that the next highest ranked Italian fencer at the time would have been the youngest - Luca CURATOLI. Given how Occhiuzzi has retied and Montano is 42, the pressure is on Samele (as the most senior member on the current Italian team) to inherit the pride of the Italian Individual Men's Sabre. Samele has really stepped it up during the Tokyo Olympic Cycle. After winning the first Grand Prix of the Cycle in Cancun 2016, Samele fell out of the FIE Senior Top 16, but improved drastically around 2019, when he won Silver at the 2019 Cairo World Cup, and Bronze at the 2020 Montreal Grand Prix, becoming ranked 11 at the end of the 2019-20 Season and going into Tokyo 2021 as one of the top seeds. On the Right - Szilagyi Aron of Hungary (FIE Rank 2) - Szilagyi is the reigning Olympic Champion in Men's Individual Sabre from London 2012 and Rio 2016. Szilagyi has consistently finished in the Top 5 since the Season of 2011-12 - a seriously impressive feat. Szilagyi won Silver at the final event - Budapest 2021 - before the Tokyo Olympics. Previous Match-ups - These two have faced each other only once during this Olympic Cycle. At the 2020 Montreal Grand Prix, Samele defeated Szilagyi 15/10. However during the Rio Olympic cycle, these two faced each other three times, where Szilagyi won them all. 0:00 Intro 0:22 Bout Begins
