Bribery originated in ancient civilizations as soon as structured governance, law courts, and public offices appeared. Documented instances date back to at least 1400 BC in Mesopotamia and Egypt. The first known law against it was issued by Egyptian Pharaoh Horemheb (1342–1314 BC), who prescribed capital punishment for judges accepting bribes. If there is government, there will be bribery. Any system of governance is the setting for being tempted with a bribe… VS 5: The Setting - “taking” is “led” as Jesus was led into the wilderness. Jesus is under the control of the Holy Spirit so this is “Spirit led” still. Point: The devil is showing off his supernatural ability while using the glory of these earthly kingdoms to create an opportunity for temptation. LOOK I HAVE A SHINY OBJECT!! VS 6: Deception - “All this authority” is deceptive. 3 times in John’s gospel, Jesus references the devil as the “ruler of this world”. “This world” is the unbelieving world. John 12: 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 14:30, 16:11. 2 Cor. 44 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. God is the ultimate authority: Dan. 417 ‘This decision is by the decree of the watchers, And the sentence by the word of the holy ones, In order that the living may know That the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, Gives it to whomever He will, And sets over it the lowest of men.’ Ps. 24 The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein. VS 7: The Bribe - Jesus was being presented with an opportunity to achieve what the Messiah would achieve at the Second Coming rulership of the nations. The “bribe” was to rule now, not later, and the cost would be worship of the devil. Written in the original text to mean just a one time, quick moment of worship!! VS 8: The Response - Worship is intimately linked to service. It would skip the cross and Jesus would be in full blown service to the devil. We are tempted today in this way: Get the glory without suffering (Church doctrine) Circumvent Gods providential care and His promises for a “quick fix”. Skip suffering and waiting for the here after and make the here and now paradise.
