When something in an HVAC or plumbing system doesn’t make sense, guessing is expensive. Yesterday I was called to a rural home where the hot water storage tank was leaking. The house was only five years old. The homeowner built it himself. What made this situation unusual wasn’t just the leak. It was the heavy mineral buildup and corrosion — but only at the holding tank connections. None of the other plumbing in the home showed the same issue. That’s not normal. After reviewing the installation, we found the original connection from the tank to the water lines was done using black iron pipe transitioning to another metal. Black iron is typically used for gas piping — not for hot water tank connections. When dissimilar metals are joined in a water system, a galvanic reaction can occur. Over time, that reaction causes corrosion and mineral buildup at the connection point. The issue wasn’t random. It wasn’t bad luck. It was the wrong material in the wrong place. In hydronic and hot water systems, proper brass or dielectric fittings should be used between tank connections and copper lines to prevent premature corrosion. The bigger lesson? When something doesn’t make sense — don’t guess. Collect the facts. Verify the materials. Confirm the cause. Because guessing creates more damage than delay ever will. If you're a homeowner trying to understand how your HVAC or hot water system actually works — and how to avoid costly installation mistakes — this channel is built for you. Stay comfortable and please stay tuned. Doug Cross ProQuoteHive
