The arrival of Şivan Perwer to the studio had something exciting. We knew that every Kurd in the diaspora had a music cassette of his and that he had lived in exile for years and sang for the recognition of Kurdish culture and the liberation of the Kurdish people. It was an unforgettable Sunday morning. Besides Perwer, Reinbert de Leeuw and Wim T. Schippers were was our guest on the live program on January 16th 2000. Born in 1955, Perwer spoke and looked like a warrior. “I was born in music and life has further drenched me in it. Music is the companion of every Kurd ”. His music was infused with elements of the Kurdish music tradition. The cadence of the big drums, the sound of the zourna (wooden flute) and he incorporated religious elements of the medieval oriental romanticism and battle songs about the martyrs of Kurdistan and the destruction of the country. "I combine all these traditional elements with my desire for the recognition of the Kurds as a people." As early as 1975 he began to incorporate political and sociocultural symbols into his lyrics and sang in forbidden Kurdish. Listening to his music was not without danger. Today Perwer still sings about human rights, respect and the need for freedom. His new recording can be heard on Spotify and is called Çiyayê Kurdan (Kurdish mountain).
