On this day 38 years ago, the Indo-Lanka accord was signed by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sri Lankan President JR Jayawardene in Colombo. One of the conditions therein was the deployment of Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) primarily to arrest the ethnic violence and restore peace. Initially, the Indian troops were welcomed by the Tamils but soon after one incident changed the whole dynamics. LTTE chief V Prabhakaran took the battle to the IPKF and the next three-odd years led to a bloody chapter in India’s military history. Over 1100 Indian soldiers were killed and many others were injured. In this chat with BSI Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale, Col.
