Unboxing: COVID-19 Rapid Diagnostic Kit

Since the start of the pandemic, labs around the world have been using molecular tests to detect the virus that causes COVID-19. Manufacturers have been working to develop reliable but less expensive and faster diagnostic tests as an addition to the current countries’ toolkits to help expand access to testing and decreasing delays in diagnosis. Instead of detecting the virus itself that causes COVID-19, these tests detect proteins called antigens that are specific to the infection. While these tests provide an almost definitive result, they have a relatively high cost, and require a laboratory infrastructure, and sometimes can take up to several days to receive a result. In addition to molecular tests, UNICEF is now procuring and supplying these kits to countries to help them in their response to limit the spread of the pandemic.
