Mondo Bati - World Beat

"Mondo Bati," means "World Beat" in Esperanto. This video is a result of a collaborative effort of 7 dancers from Rwanda, the Congo, Sweden, the US, and France who choreographed the dance and shot it in the city that brought them together - Kigali, Rwanda. "Imigongo" is a traditional art form in Rwanda most often using geometric designs in black and white. We chose to incorporate this both literally (by painting on the dancers' backs in this style) as well as figuratively throughout the video with the featured venues, formations, costumes, and general color schemes. As friends, we always have each other's backs and we wanted that to be the core message of this video. The word "Imigongo" in kinyarwanda literally translates to the plural form for "back." As such, we played around with the idea of " the back" as a support structure and symbol of strength and unity. To Mondo Bati, dance serves as an international language, a pillar that binds our friendship together.
