Self-worship has crept into the church. How has it crept into the church? It has crept in in the form of expressive individualism, personality-driven ministry, and preference-accommodating demands where it continues to damage and sometimes outright destroy church fellowship. The presence of self-worship within the church carries with it a fundamental problem in that it is diametrically opposite to Christ-worship: “No one can serve two masters…” You cannot worship self and Christ. The extent of self-worship within the church is perhaps best seen in a Barna study which discovered that 66% of churchgoing Christians agree with the statement: “enjoying yourself is the highest goal of life.” I do not think one can have a more opposite view of the biblical definition of the goal of life. The biblical answer to the goal of life is beautifully encapsulated in the first question of the Westminster Catechism: “What is the chief end of man? The chief end of man is to know God and enjoy Him forever.”
