https://wemakeit.com/projects/zumthor... In 1996 the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio opened its doors with Peter Zumthor leading one of its first design studios. Conceived as a three-year educational experiment, Zumthor’s studio developed a unique methodology based on a series of 19 exercises designed to teach students the ‘foundations of composition’. In order to document the outcomes of such an ambitious project, a meticulous archive was built by Zumthor and his assistant over the years, recording in more than 4.000 slides the work of 69 students from 1996 until 1999. This precious material remained forgotten for almost 30 years, until it was rediscovered as part of a doctoral research. The book ‘Teaching Architecture: Peter Zumthor in Mendrisio’ emerges from that research, aiming to share with a broader audience a seminal event that not only reveals the thinking of one of the most relevant architects of our time, but also helped to shape the identity of the Accademia in Mendrisio.
