We begin with neurulation, where the notochord induces the overlying ectoderm to form the neural plate, which then folds to create the neural tube. Zach highlights the timeline and key checkpoints of primary and secondary neurulation, and the role of the neural folds, neural groove, and neuropores in proper closure of the central nervous system. Next, we move into vesiculation, where the cranial portion of the neural tube forms three primary brain vesicles—prosencephalon, mesencephalon, and rhombencephalon—which further divide into five secondary brain vesicles. These vesicles give rise to major brain regions such as the cerebrum, thalamus, midbrain, pons, cerebellum, and medulla oblongata. The lecture concludes with an in-depth look at neural crest cell migration, explaining how these multipotent cells migrate throughout the embryo to form structures such as craniofacial cartilage, peripheral nerves, Schwann cells, melanocytes, adrenal medulla, and portions of the heart.
