Starting in late 2022, NICE (Nassau Inter-County Express) began to retire the majority of the final fleet that the company had inherited from the MTA's discontinued division, MTA Long Island Bus, the 2010-2011 Orion VII Next Generation CNG fleet, numbered 1800 to 1839. Originally, these buses were ordered and delivered to Mitchel Field and Rockville Depots in Long Island while they were still under ownership of the MTA but funded and primarily specified by Nassau County. They were the second and last fleet under Long Island Bus to have the standard MTA cooperate scheme after discontinuing the two-color blue and orange stripe scheme that lasted until the 2003-2004 Orion V CNG buses, which retired in 2019 under NICE bus ownership. They were also some of the last Orion VII Next Generation buses built by Orion before the Orion VII EPA10 lineup fully replaced the name as a whole. Aside from the pilot, 1800, they featured no front blue stripe and a blue front logo, with a full length straight blue strip going across the body under a full black mask around the window areas, unlike the raised slant stripe toward the back of the bus that the 2008-2009 Orion VII NG CNG order that came before was equipped with (as with all other Orion VII NG's ordered by the MTA at the time). These buses were also some of the first buses under MTA ownership to be ordered and delivered with LED interior lighting, only coming in third to the NYCT-owned 2009-2010 Nova Bus LFSA fleet, and the now-retired and short-lived 2009 Designline EcoSaver IV HEV fleet. Once these were inherited by NICE, all active units were gradually wrapped in the full body orange scheme with blue and white stripes, being the last buses to receive this secondhand wrap before the 2012 Orion VII EPA10 CNG fleet was delivered brand new with the NICE scheme in anticipation for their takeover. As of February 2025, as NICE receives their third consecutive order of Gillig BRT+ CNG buses, they are set to completely retire the remaining Orion VII NG CNG buses inherited, and most of the remaining Orion-built fleet in general, including the 2012 Orion VII EPA10 CNG's. There are just only 4 units remaining, after NICE had maintained about 10 units after the initial retirement period took place between 2022 and 2023 and retiring them when they were no longer useful for regular service. The 4 units that remain are numbered 1811, 1817, 1818, and 1824, running regular service usually during rush hours with the rest of the active fleet. Once the 2025 Gillig BRT+ CNG fleet enters service, these 3 final inherited units will be promptly retired, making NICE buses fleet entirely originally delivered to the agency post-takeover. #nicebus Video Clips Taken: February, 18th, 2025.
