Bakshiganj thana was formed at 30 April 1982 and it was turned into an upazila at 14 September 1983 by the strong support of Mr.M.A.Sattar (Ex.Minister). Local leaders Mr Abdul Hamid, Adv Ashraf Ali, Alhaz Mohammad Abdur Rashid Master (Freedom Fighter) Nilerchor Shadur Para. Prof. Momtaz Uddin Nadir, Mr Hamidur Rahman, Adv Nazrul Islam & Mr Abdur Rouf Talukder supported to Mr M.A Sattar. Late Shamsul Haque Siddique, B.A.B.L was the founder of Bakshiganj N.M. High School in 1935 also he was a land lord of Bakshiganj thana. Kimot ullah Talukder's family was the founder of first college in bakshigong. Kiamotullah college. During the war of liberation the Pakistan army established a military camp at Kamalpur, in the northern sector. From the point of view of war strategy this camp was so important that its fall meant to lose control over the whole Jamalpur-Dhaka region. The freedom fighters attacked Kamalpur many times. On 31 July 1971 the freedom fighters attacked Kamalpur under the command of Major Moinul Hussain Chowdhury, Battalion Commanding Officer of the 1st East Bengal Regiment of Z Force Brigade under, by then, Lt. Col. Ziaur Rahman, Commander BDF Sector 11. This time final victory was not achieved but the casualties on both sides including Pakistan army were huge. In this battle 35 freedom fighters including Captain Salahuddin Momtaz, Ahaduzzaman and Abul Kalam Azad were killed. During mid August Major Abu Taher arrived in this sector. Lt. Col. Zia assigned him as Commander of sub-Sector 2 at Mahendragonj. Taher tried with two more attempts to capture the Pakistan Army stronghold of Kamalpur with assistance from the Indian Army but was unable to achieve victory. Taher lost his leg in a mine blast while in a debriefing on the 2nd of November and flown to Puna, India for treatment. During the early pre dawn hours of 3 November 1971, Squadron Leader M. Hamidullah Khan TJ, Sitara-e-Harb, was assigned subsequently as BDF Commander of Sector 11.
