(2 Mar 2019) The world famous Rio de Janeiro carnival officially opened on Friday at the Sambodrome despite safety concerns. Rio's evangelical bishop-turned-mayor, Marcelo Crivella, came under heavy criticism for failing to kick off official celebrations by handing over the key of the city to the king of Carnival for the third consecutive year. Up until Friday, the carnival king and Candonga, a cultural institution that guards the ceremonial key, were left wondering if the opening ceremony would  go ahead. An hour before the event, the head of the Rio's tourism board, Riotur, said he would participate in the ceremony. Marcelo Alves told reporters that he would be turning in the keys to the carnival, not the keys to the city as is tradition. The evangelical Crivella has made negative comments about African-rooted religions, which many Brazilians practice and have great cultural influence on Carnival celebrations. Rio de Janeiro hosts one of the world's most famous carnival, and on Friday the uncertainty was not just about the opening ceremony but about the safety conditions of the Sambodrome, where the Samba Schools parade. Firefighters, members of the city hall and representatives of LIESA (the associations of Samba Schools) inspected the Sambodrome early in the day. After the firefighters presented their report to the justice, a judge uthorised the use of the Sambodrome for the parades. In addition to the parade of the Samba Schools, hundreds of carnival street parties will be happening in Rio de Janeiro between Friday and Tuesday when the party ends.
