On August 25th, 2020, two days after police officers shot and paralyzed Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin, militias arrived with the stated goal of protecting businesses in the midst of protests and unrest. One of these armed men was Kyle Rittenhouse, a then-17 year old who was “hired” by a car dealership to help protect it. Arriving with a group of older militiamen, Rittenhouse tagged along with Ryan Balch and others who characterized him as inexperienced and liable to be taken advantage of by protesters. By 11:45 PM, Kyle Rittenhouse would shoot Joseph Rosenbaum, a man who threatened and pursued him, plus two other men who assumed they were responding to an active shooter. Although video footage seemed to give Rittenhouse a self-defense claim, both liberals and conservatives stepped beyond available evidence to either decry him as a white nationalist looking to kill or an outright hero, obscuring not only their own roles in contributing to Kenosha’s decades-long decline, but also the role of the police, militias, and allegations of intimidation tactics that helped escalate tensions into violence. In this video, I explore not only the Kyle Rittenhouse case but the deeper structural questions surrounding it.
