Marella Discovery is an old Royal Caribbean ship launched in 1996 and was known as Splendour Of The Seas. When RCL no longer wanted her Marella took her on and saved this beautiful classic liner from the breakers as she still has life left in her. Personally we much prefer these smaller classic cruise ships to the gigantic monstrosities. Marella is owned by TUI UK and properly started as Thomson Cruises back in 1997 before renaming in 2017. John was on the Island Breeze in 1997 followed by the Emerald and had many trips on the TSS Topaz (The company's first all inclusive ship) and then Spirit, Destiny and Dream (Formally the Costa Europa - and was nicer back then!). Marella are well known for being All Inclusive with no hidden extras to pay like gratuities. They now have a 2 tier drink package system if you want to upgrade to Premium. In our eyes it is well worth the upgrade from a price point. Was the company better when it was Thomson? Without question, yes. These days Marella are wanting more casual cruising and appealing to a different market. We will give you a run down of what to expect on your trip from getting to the airport in the UK to disembarkation on the way back. Our experience was filmed in mid November 2023 doing the Cocktails and Coconuts followed by Tropical Shores itineraries. An ESTA is required for Tropical Shores due to them visiting US Virgin Islands. It's a bit of a mess around on your first port of call in San Juan but after that it's fine as you don't need the early alarm call again. On that note - San Juan is amazing! People have compared entertainment with Marella as 'Butlins at Sea'. Is it true? We will tell you. So what's in this vlog?
