With years of experience solving complex electrical issues, Halo Power specializes in diagnosing difficult electrical problems, performing service upgrades, emergency electrical repairs, & protecting homes from costly electrical failures. Their goal: keep homes safe, keep power running reliably, & provide homeowners with clear information about what is happening behind their walls & underground service lines. Halo Power understands the unique electrical challenges that affect homes in Sherwood Park neighbourhoods like Lakeland Ridge, Summerwood, Aspen Trails & Heritage Hills, where underground electrical services are common. They can quickly diagnose problems & guide homeowners through repairs when electrical emergencies occur. In this video, Kevin Staigh from Halo Power describes an electrical emergency that happened at 3:00 a.m. during a -30°C night in Lakeland Ridge, Sherwood Park. A homeowner woke up to the unmistakable smell of burning electrical & their entire home had lost power. The fire department responded, Fortis Alberta was contacted & an electrical contractor was called in to diagnose the problem. The cause was a failure in the underground electrical service cable running from the transformer in the cul-de-sac to the home. When the neutral conductor failed, the electrical system inside the house lost its voltage balance. Under normal conditions, homes receive around 120-125 volts per leg in the electrical panel. When the neutral connection breaks, voltages can spike dramatically. In this case, the electrical system experienced dangerous voltage fluctuations approaching 180 volts, which modern electronics are not designed to handle. The results were costly. Several electronic devices were damaged, including a Ring doorbell & other electronics connected to the home’s electrical system. The furnace also failed after power was restored. In modern homes filled with sensitive electronics such as refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves, televisions, gaming systems & smart devices, these voltage spikes can destroy thousands of dollars worth of equipment in seconds. Kevin also explains why Sherwood Park neighbourhoods may be experiencing more underground cable failures. Many of these communities were built on former agricultural land with sloughs & high water tables. Large amounts of soil were brought in during development & over time the combination of ground shifting, freeze thaw cycles, moisture & underground cable construction methods can damage the older style unarmoured service cables. These cables are often buried about 3' underground & were not originally installed inside protective conduit. As the ground moves & debris presses against the cable, damage can occur that leads to catastrophic failure. The early warning signs homeowners should never ignore, include: • Flickering lights • Appliances failing prematurely • Electronics burning out unexpectedly • Strange electrical behaviour in the home Many homeowners who later discover cable failures report replacing multiple dishwashers, refrigerators, or appliances within just a few years before the larger electrical problem is discovered. Kevin also walks through how these problems are diagnosed & repaired. Fortis Alberta may temporarily restore power using a service saver transformer, allowing the home to operate while the cable fault is located. The utility can locate underground faults by “thumping” the cable with testing equipment, marking the failure point for repair. Repairs often require exposing the cable using hydrovac excavation, a safe method that uses water & vacuuming instead of digging equipment to avoid damaging other utilities like gas, internet, or water lines. Kevin explains how new construction protects electrical service cables by running them through underground conduit, allowing replacement cables to be pulled through without digging up yards in the future. The biggest takeaway is simple: do not ignore electrical issues in your home. Early diagnosis could prevent a complete electrical failure & thousands of dollars in damage.
