Today began with joy and hope as the youngest eaglet FSV55 had just hatched yesterday (April 10th). The day began with several good feedings where all the eaglets got fed and FSV55 got several good bites! Things were going along smoothly but it was a very warm Colorado day & there is not much shade for this nest. All the eaglets were panting but the older chicks were able to easily climb all over the nest to rest in the shade of a parent. Even 54 the second youngest was able to get some shade today but little 55 could not being so tiny and unable to climb out of the nest bowl. FSV had a fighting spirit and tried several times to climb out of the bowl but kept falling over backwards. Eaglets are not able to self regulate their body temperature to heat or cold until they are about two weeks of age when their second coat of thermal down will grow in. Until that time they are most vulnerable to the weather. Eagles do not have sweat glands, so they pant in order to cool off. You can see all four eaglets were panting today but 55 being the smallest, weakest and with poor eyesight from hatching yesterday, was most vulnerable & could not get any shade. The cause of FSV55's death is unknown but it could be heat related. Ma covered 55 with grass & pushed its little body deeper into the bowl to became part of the nest forever. 💔 Sadly, FSV55 passed away around 12:13pm today. It was heartbreaking to go from joy to sorrow in the manner of a few hours. Soar high sweet 55 ♥ Your life was short, but it was filled with love from Ma, Pa, your siblings and the thousands of viewers from around the world turning in to see the miracle of a fourth bald eaglet hatch & grow. FSV55 you gave us all such joy & happiness! Fly high on angel wings - you will never be forgotten 🌈💔 ❤🐥🌌 ♾️ Thank you for watching! Pa FSV was captured and banded as an adult by a wildlife biologist working with the Denver International Airport - his age is unknown. What does the Fort St. Vrain bald eagle site look like? The eagles' nest (FSV-N0) is 9 x 8 feet wide, eight feet high, and 57 feet off the ground. It has a perimeter of about 26 feet, a total area of about 56 feet, and probably weighs between 2200 and 2700 pounds! The nest is located in a cottonwood on the banks of the St. Vrain River near Platteville, CO, on property owned by Xcel Energy. We’re not sure how old it is, but Bob Anderson and Rob MacIntyre put the first cam system up in 2003, when the nest was already well established. FSV-N0 is built primarily of cottonwood branches (the dominant tree in many river systems out west) and lined with prairie grass. After the primary limb supporting the nest fell in August of 2020, RRP Director John Howe worked with Xcel Energy to put up a new bionic limb and restore the nest. The eagles gave it their seal of approval just a few days later!
