(14 Oct 2025) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ASSOCIATED PRESS Qiddiya, Saudi Arabia - 9 October 2025 ++STARTS AND ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++ 1. SOUNDBITE (English) Baraa Anwer, The Associated Press: "I’m in Qiddiya, Saudi Arabia, where the FIA’s new hydrogen off road series, Extreme H, is making its debut powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology. The series brings zero-emission racing into the desert, using vehicles designed for off-road conditions. The cars, known as Pioneer 25, generate electricity by combining hydrogen with oxygen, producing only water vapor as exhaust." 2. Various of Extreme H Cars 3. SOUNDBITE (English) Baraa Anwer, The Associated Press: "With extreme weather and rugged terrain, the series tests not just the speed of these cars, but their resilience and innovation. Each vehicle runs on a mix of fuel cell systems and high-performance batteries, allowing them to maintain power through intense desert stages. Engineers have designed them to perform in extreme heat, rocky ground, and at high speeds — all while relying on fuel cell systems and battery support." SOUNDBITE (English) Baraa Anwer, The Associated Press: "The format also keeps a strong focus on diversity and equality, with mixed-gender driver teams competing side by side. During pit stops, crews manage precise hydrogen refueling — a highly sensitive process that demands both speed and safety. The series presents a new approach to motorsport, combining hydrogen power and off-road racing in a challenging real-world environment." STORYLINE: A new type of off-road racing began in the deserts of Saudi Arabia, as the Extreme H series—featuring the world’s first hydrogen-powered race cars—made its debut in Qiddiya. Developed as a next step from the electric Extreme E series, the new Pioneer 25 vehicles are powered by hydrogen fuel cells that emit only water vapor. Designed for tough terrain and high performance, the cars carry hydrogen tanks that fuel a cell that converts hydrogen into electricity, which then powers the car’s battery and dual electric motors. Drivers adjusting to the new machines note that while the hydrogen system charges the battery during operation, the cars are significantly heavier—about 600 kilograms more than the previous electric models. That shift demands a change in technique. As hydrogen vehicles tear through the rocky terrain of Qiddiya, Extreme H is setting a high-speed example of how motorsport can innovate in the age of climate-conscious engineering—offering a glimpse into what the future of racing might look like.
