A rarely issued recording of the great French pianist Marcelle Meyer playing the 'Sonata del Sur' (Southern Sonata) for piano and orchestra by the Spanish composer Óscar Esplá, with the composer conducting the National Orchestra of Spain. This recording was not included on EMI's References series in the 1980s, nor on their three Introuvables volumes of CDs devoted to the bulk of Meyer's discography. It was on a Spanish EMI double-CD set devoted to works by Esplá, having been on a Spanish EMI Esplá compilation on vinyl as well. The recording was finally included in EMI France's superb 17-CD anniversary edition devoted to Meyer's complete commercial recordings. A champion of modern music much like one of her important teachers, Catalan pianist Ricardo Viñes, Meyer premiered and performed a great many 20th century works. This composition, however, was premiered by Eduardo del Pueyo in Paris 1945. Meyer played the work in Madrid in November 1956 with Ataulfo Argenta conducting and then recorded the work with the composer conducting - the actual date of the recording is not clear, but the record was released in 1957 on the obscure Hispavox label (HH-1001, pictured here), so this reading likely took place around the time of the aforementioned concert performance. As always, Meyer plays with remarkably supple phrasing, rhythmic vitality, and transparent textures, resisting the urge to bang out dissonances in modern music and instead focusing on lyrical, harmonic, and rhythmic elements of the music, always with beautiful tone.
