OBJECTIVES Identify how rising and falling intonations sound like Understand the importance of intonation in communicating Use the correct intonation of a phrase or a sentence LESSON PREREQUISITE None. LESSON PROPER What is intonation? A typical conversation moves between middle and high pitch tones to express emotions; like surprise, happiness, shock, fear, or disbelief. Intonation involves the rising and falling of the voice in a conversation. Rising Intonation describes how the voice rises at the end of a sentence. We use a rising intonation when asking for information or questions answerable by yes or no. Look at these examples. Are you going on a vacation? Did you finish your assigned task? May I go shopping this morning? Are you still studying your lessons? Will you please read the letter for me? Falling Intonation describes how the voice falls on the final strained syllable or a cluster of words. We use the falling intonation to show the end of telling a statement when talking and when using WH and H questions. For example: Where are your parents? I love mangoes. Why are you late? When is your brother coming back? That’s a lovely idea!
