Dr. Bill Johnson of Innovations Medical is here to give us an introduction to the gold standard and body shaping and he is the expert at Liposuction. Hey Dr. J! Dr. J: Good Morning! Host: All right let’s talk about liposuction, just the basics to find exactly what’s happening. Dr. J: A lot of folks don’t understand what we’re really doing is applying suction to the fat and when we do that we’re not removing all the fat in an area, we’re kind of just really swish cheesing it. We’re making a lot of small holes in the fat but we’re leaving most of the connective tissue that supports the fat and that’s a good thing because that’s what keeps the tissue in the skin above healthy and keeps the skin connected so it’s that important to leave those connective tissue fibers. Host: Okay, so that’s explaining a little bit about how it’s done. Let’s go into more detail of what’s happening. Dr. J: Well nowadays most liposuction is done with what’s called tumescent fluid. Tumescent fluid is a mixture of fluids that we actually pump into the area. Even if you’re going to go under general anesthesia they’re going to use tumescent fluid now a days. The reason is not only does it make the area numb enough for me to be able to suction it and do the procedure but also what’s in the tumescent fluid reduces the swelling. It reduces the bruising and it decreases the risk of infection. So it speeds the recovery and makes it a savior procedure. Then if you’re doing it like in our office and are just the local, you definitely have less risk of complications and it’s a safer procedure. Host: Okay, so that’s very important factor when it comes to liposuction. So let’s talk about the tools that are used to actually remove the fat. Dr. J: Yeah, there are lots of claims out there about this tool and that tool in smart lipo and different kinds of assist devices. The real true key and I think I get pretty complete agreement with any doctor you would ask what’s the real key is that the doctor be familiar with the tools he or she is using, okay because the idea is to get the fat out in a smooth and consistent manner so we have a nice appearance when we’re done. Okay, and a lot of tools will get you there. But what you want is the doctor is familiar and pleased with his tool. We use vibration assisted liposuction for our cases and we always do skin tightening with the smartlipo that’s a great combination for us we get really nice results. Really consistent smoothness and really good skin tightening. Host: We’ve seen things that we want to hear and we’ve seen your before and afters before and they speak for themselves. Dr. J: Well this is above a before and after about the abdomen and love handles and you can see that before she was just, it was okay and she didn’t mind being in a swimsuit but afterwards she was much better, it’s a sleeker, trimmer look and a much fitter look and that’s just doing liposuction.
