When I discovered a rather unusual diversion to CrossCountry services I decided I had to do it. Instead of simply bearing left at Rotherham Masborough and taking the “old road” directly to Chesterfield, XC rerouted their trains via Rotherham Central to Woodburn Junction, where a reversal was necessary. It was then on to Woodhouse, right to Beighton Junction to get to the “old road” that way! When I got to Derby I noted that the train back to Sheffield was cancelled, but not right through. The bit I needed ran from Derby to Sheffield! It was a new EMR 800 series train and it looked good, BUT…! It wasn’t very comfortable. First class was better, as you’d expect, but standard class was way below par in my opinion. The seats were far too small/short and too hard, even first class seating wasn’t soft and comfy. I don’t know how many times TOCs and the railway as a whole has got to be told about hard uncomfortable seating! It’s like they know, but refuse to do anything about it, and it’s so annoying! When I got to Sheffield I got another surprise; a 156 on a Hope Valley local service! In contrast this Northern 156 was more comfortable than the previously mentioned new EMR train! A train that’s been in service for well over 30 years is better, more comfortable and pleasant to ride on than a brand new modern train! Crazy! As usual I nipped to Henshall’s butchers in Chinley before popping back to Edale for lunch at The Old Nag’s Head. As the weather wasn’t great I went straight home via Manchester and Leeds.
