Is Running Balanced Audio Better For Headphones? The answer is, in short - it really just depends on the design. As a protocol for headphones balanced is not inherently better. I've seen many cases where balanced is being used as a crutch to make up for some flaw in the amplifier design, or an amplifier/DAC is marketed as being balanced, when internally it's really single-ended or not full differential balanced. So, there's a lot of BS out there. Good singled-ended (like for example Chord DACs which are singled-ended) will always sound better than mediocre balanced. The other issue with balanced is the connectors. There is not an industry-standard (yet) so there is 4-pin XLR which is too big and inconvenient for portables, 2 3-pin XLRs, the new Pentacon connectors, which seems ideal, but it's really difficult to work with very tiny connectors inside.
