The urinary system’s job is to filter our blood, maintain the balance of water and electrolytes in the body, remove waste products to form urine, and then excrete the urine from the body. The urinary system is also called the excretory system because, during urine formation, many waste materials like urea, uric acid, creatinine, drugs, and excess salts are included in the urine and then transported out of the body. This process is called excretion, and since the urinary system performs it, the urinary system is also known as the excretory system. The main organ of the urinary system is the kidney. Kidneys are a pair of organs located in the back of our abdomen on either side of the vertebral column. They are shaped like kidney beans and are dark brown in color. In an adult human, a kidney is about 4 to 5 inches long, 2 to 3 inches wide, and about 1 inch thick. After filtering the blood, the kidneys produce urine, which then enters the ureter. There are two ureters, and they start in the abdomen and connect to the urinary bladder in the pelvic region. The ureter is a muscular tube-like organ whose function is to carry urine to the urinary bladder. The urinary bladder is a sac-like muscular organ that stores urine for a short period. It is located in the pelvic region behind the pubic symphysis, which is the joint between our left and right pelvic bones. The walls of the urinary bladder contain smooth muscles that make it stretchy, allowing it to expand like a balloon and store urine. On average, the urinary bladder can hold 400 to 600 ml of urine. When a certain amount of urine is stored in the bladder, the nervous system sends a signal for urination, making us feel the urge to urinate. The last organ after the urinary bladder is a thin-walled tube called the urethra. The urethra's job is to transport urine from the bladder out of the body. The sphincter muscle plays an important role in holding urine. These muscles tighten and relax as needed to control urination. The sphincters are located on the sides of the urethra to hold the urine. In males, the urethra is longer than in females and also transports semen in addition to urine. In females, the urethra is shorter and only transports urine. #UrinarySystem #KidneyFunction #UrineFormation #ExcretorySystem #Kidneys #Ureters #UrinaryBladder #Urethra #BloodFiltration #BodyWasteRemoval
