This BMW 5 Series has been fitted with a detachable tow bar, with 13 pin dedicated electrics to take advantage of its towing capabilities in the safest possible way. The process of fitting a detachable tow bar involves removing the rear bumper and factory crash beam, and replacing it with the new tow bar and detachable tow ball. This is then married up with electrics, either 7 pin or 13 pin, depending on the towing requirements. In this case, we have fitted 13 pin electrics using a dedicated wiring loom. When installing tow bar electrics, we ONLY install dedicated electrics. This is because they integrate directly with the vehicle ECU to update settings when towing equipment is connected. As vehicles become increasingly electronic, dedicated electrics is essential as the vehicle will update its settings for cruise control, ABS, traction control, and also de-activate the rear parking sensors to avoid false indications.
