Is there a better example of the failures with the Buffalo Sabres front office that I even have to discuss these two guys as being in a competition for the 7th D-Man spot? The 2025/26 Buffalo Sabres are a team that is going to be defined by its defensive corps, but the fact that all of the competition is between the 7th and 8th D-men and not the 6th and 7th D-men shows that this team is still a step behind the competition. Jacob Bryson is an undersized d-man with an offensive skillset that typically fails to provide offense. He is also 27, and coming off a season that, according to advanced metrics, was the worst of his career. On the other hand, the Sabres grabbed Zachary Jones in free agency. Jones has developed slowly at the NHL level, but is starting to show flashes of being an offensive defenseman who can also be solid on the backend. He is also undersized, but not to the degree Bryson is. How this competition will shake out is going to be one of the critical issues determined in this upcoming preseason.
