It is a small crab unique to Guangdong, edible and delicious. It is not farmed, but grows in the mudflats at the junction of salt and fresh water. It is not big. The shell is dark in color, has protrusions, and is slightly flat and soft. In the past, "XiaLa" was used as fertilizer to feed ducks. "XiaLa" matures in June and July every year. "PengQi" (Varuna litterata): "PengQi" is scientifically named "Varuna litterata". It is used to walking sideways. Sometimes when it walks straight, it holds its two front claws together, bows its head with every step, swaying and polite, just like the ancient people performing a salute. Therefore, literati and gourmets gave it the elegant name "Li Yun" based on the ancient Chinese sentence "Li Yun, Li Yun, what about jade and silk?" Pitou Village: During the mid-to-late Ming Dynasty (around the 15th - 16th centuries), the village was named "Pitou" due to its location at the alluvial plain where the "Hua Di River" (formerly known as "Da Keng Yong") flows into the Pearl River. The name "Pitou" means "the estuary of the river." In the Qing Dynasty (18th - 19th centuries), the village was part of the "Fangcun Da Wei" flood prevention system. The economy was based on "wei tian" (enclosed field) agriculture. Relying on the water transport of the Hua Di River, the village supplied agricultural products (mainly flowers and vegetables) to the urban area of Guangzhou. In 1921, when Guangzhou was officially established as a city, "Pitou Village" was incorporated into "Fangcun District." In 1958, the village became part of the "He Dong People's Commune" in Guangzhou's suburban area. Land was collectivized, and the policy of "focusing on grain production" was implemented. Some farmlands were converted to grow cash crops such as jasmine and tea. In the 1960s, the construction of "Guangzhong Highway" (today's Fangcun Avenue) improved land transportation, but agriculture remained the mainstay of the village. In the 1970s, the construction of water conservancy facilities (such as electric pumping stations) alleviated the threat of flooding. In 1985, "Fangcun District" was re-established as a county-level district, and the administrative affiliation of "Pitou Village" was clarified. In the early 1990s, with the rapid expansion of Guangzhou city, some farmlands in "Pitou" were requisitioned. Major roads such as "Hua Di Avenue" were built, and the village gradually became surrounded by urban areas. In 1993, the planning of "Pitou" subway station was implemented (opened in 1997). In 2002, "Fangcun District" was merged into "Liwan District," and "Pitou Village" was incorporated into the urban management framework. Around 2005, the village completed the transformation from a rural to an urban community. Villagers became urban residents, and the "Pitou Economic Cooperative" was established to manage collective assets.
