In the process of repairing a model of a Newcomen steam engine for the University of Glasgow, James Watt came up with ideas for improvement which he developed in partnership with Matthew Boulton. Watt continued to make modifications and improvements, increasing capacity, efficiency, safety, and ease of installation. Initially erection of the engines was supervised by Watt. As business increased, other Boulton and Watt employees took on the task, including William Murdoch, credited with developing the oscillating cylinder steam engine and the invention of gas lighting, and who became a partner in the company. ‘Newcdiagpl.PNG’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘James Watt by Henry Howard.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Watt steam pumping engine.JPG’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘William Murdoch (1754-1839).jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Murdoch House, Cross Street, Redruth (4945749259).jpg’ by Tim Green from Bradford is licensed under CC BYSA 2,0 via Wikimedia Commons ‘William Murdoch's House - Redruth - geograph.org.uk - 3755591.jpg’ by Ashley Dace is licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0 via Wikimedia Commons ‘View of the Soho Manufactory near Birmingham.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Boulton, Watt & Murdoch.jpg’ by Murgatroyd49 is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 via Wikimedia Commons ‘Flywheel of the Boulton-Watt steam engine (4803665199).jpg’ by Newtown grafitti from Sydney, Australia is licensed bunder CC BY-SA 2.0 ‘James Eckford Lauder - James Watt and the Steam Engine- the Dawn of the Nineteenth Century - Google Art Project.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons
