Many men go down in boxing history. Few men go down as legends. Muhammad Ali was legendary for his kindness outside the ring and elagent violence in it, George Foreman was legendary for his raw power and movie like comeback, Ken Norton was legendary for his battle till the end nature and sensational upset against Muhammad Ali. Yet the man who outclassed all of these elite boxers has been forgotten by almost all of boxing’s many fans. This video is a tribute to Jimmy Young, heavyweights uncrowned and forgotten champion. Fighting in the 70’s golden age, Young was a pure defensive boxer who in many ways resembled what a heavyweight Floyd Mayweather Jr. would look like. After a brutal KO by the hands of Ernie “The Puncher Of The Century” Shavers early in his career. Young promised himself and his family he would improve, truly going back to the drawing board and creating a style that was very much his own. In his rematch with Shavers he outpointed, outboxed, and essentially humiliated Shavers, however like most of his fights the judges would not see it that way scoring the fight a draw, he would continue fighting until he came into the crosshairs of former gang member and slugger Ron Lyle. Lyle would give it his all but his brute force couldn’t even graze Young who won a unanimous decision. Young would then be given the chance of a lifetime. A title shot at Muhammad Ali himself, Young was given little to no chance by most but to everyone’s surprise he negated Ali’s defense with crisp fast jabs and straights, essentially clowning on Ali and letting the great champion walk himself into punches. By the end Young raised his arms in victory as the crowd and the announcers praised his once in a lifetime performance while Ali moped with his head down back to his corner to await the decision. But when the decision arrived to the surprise of everyone including Ali, Young had lost a unanimous decision. This wouldn’t be the end of Young as he would get a crack at former champion George Foreman, the fight would be an underrated slugfest, with Foreman throwing everything he had at a slick and nimble Young who would knock Foreman down for the second time in his career in the final round. Finally getting his big victory, sadly it would be his last. He would face off against Ken Norton the next year and would rock the Black Hercules multiple times but once again Young would be robbed and after being the victim of corruption for the millionth time Young quit and would show up out of shape and disinterested for the rest of his career retiring with a record of 35-18-2 although his final record is below average, a prime Jimmy Young gives any heavyweight past or present trouble.
