What is the most efficient and painless way to end a life? The history of lethal injection begins in the late 1800s. Julius Mount Bleyer was a New York doctor who studied methods of execution from all over the world. At the end of this study he concluded that the best way to execute someone would be a fatal injection. Chapters: 00:00 Introduction 01:03 Birth Of An Idea 03:56 Involuntary Euthanasia 06:43 Chapman's Protocol 11:51 Cruel And Unusual 14:02 Conclusion Bleyer's ideas were first tried by the Nazis during World War Two. Hitler decided that it was necessary to kill the disabled. This included disabled children as well. The Aktion T4 campaign started in 1939 and didn't end until 1945. Parents were forced to give up their disabled children for "special care" and received death certificates in return. After World War Two ended lethal injection seemed to be a thing of the past. But in 1977 a doctor named Jay Chapman proposed a procedure known as "Chapman's Protocol". It require three shots to kill the prisoner. The first shot should induce unconsciousness, the second should paralyze the diaphragm, and the third should stop the heart. State legislatures loved the idea and it was soon adopted all over the United States. Unfortunately a great number of the executions performed in prisons were not quick nor were they painless. The medical community quickly realized it was a bad idea to help execute people so they refuse to help in any way. And many of the companies that manufacture drugs refuse to sell them to prisons. As a result many states now make the drugs they use to kill prisoners a state secret. In addition to the United States, China and Vietnam also use lethal injection. They have also had problems acquiring the necessary materials to execute prisoners. The history of lethal injection is a difficult story to tell but we think it is important.
